The 50 Best Computer Science Schools in the U.S. — the full Top 50 ranking graphic

Every college ranking in America will tell you which universities are famous. Far fewer check whether the famous name actually grants the degree on the marquee. For this list we started from the two published computer science tables that matter — U.S. News undergraduate CS and the QS Computer Science & Information Systems rankings — weighted them 50/30, added College Scorecard outcomes at 20%, and then gated all 50 finalists on a question no composite can answer: does this school actually award a bachelor's degree in computer science? MIT takes #1, with Carnegie Mellon, Stanford, UC Berkeley, and Georgia Tech behind it.

The gate caught real names. Claremont McKenna College's own site says it does not itself offer a major in computer science — its students major through Harvey Mudd, which is ranked here at #23 as the granting college. Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering, a genuinely elite engineering school, has no standalone CS bachelor's — computing lives inside its general Engineering degree — so it is out. And St. John's College has no majors at all. Every Ivy passed, Princeton included: the trap on this list was never the brand names, it was assuming them.

How this ranking was built — and what got cut

The pool started at 72 institutions — the union of the U.S. News undergraduate computer science rankings and the U.S. entries in the QS Computer Science & Information Systems table, plus program-strong schools the big tables underrate (Harvey Mudd, Rose-Hulman, Northeastern, UMass Amherst, Olin). The composite was fixed before any placement: U.S. News CS 50%, QS CS 30%, College Scorecard outcomes 20%. The final gate came back 48 of 50 clean and 2 published with disclosed flags — zero failures, because three pool names were killed before scoring.

The kills are the gate working as designed. Olin College grants three ABET degrees — mechanical, electrical and computer, and general engineering — and computing exists only as a concentration inside the third; there is no CS bachelor's to rank. Claremont McKenna states in its own catalog copy that it does not itself offer a computer science major. St. John's College runs a single all-required Great Books curriculum with no departments and no majors. An aggregator site claimed the Claremont colleges offer CS bachelor's degrees; the colleges' own pages say otherwise, and the colleges control.

Judgment calls, disclosed. One entry per degree-granting institution: Berkeley's two genuine CS routes (the B.A. in Computer Science and the B.S. in EECS) are listed once, at #4. MIT's credential is the S.B. in Computer Science and Engineering — a real standalone CS bachelor's under an MIT name, flagged rather than hidden. Cooper Union announced a B.S. in Computer Science in July 2024 and admitted its first students in 2025–26; the program passes the gate today, but with no completions or ranking history it sits in the reserves. First out: WPI, then Tufts, Case Western Reserve, Florida, and Michigan State — all verified, all one composite step behind.

How we rank

Ranked on U.S. News and QS computer science rankings and College Scorecard outcomes — 2026 composite.

Before any scoring, every candidate passes our existence gate: confirmed open, operating at the location listed, and showing recent activity. Anything closed, moved, or mislabeled is removed — no exceptions, no grandfathering. Weights and sources are published on our methodology page.

Notes & corrections

This list is re-verified before it is posted anywhere, and program status is spot-checked on a rolling basis — CS programs launch as well as close (Cooper Union's B.S. in Computer Science admitted its first class in 2025–26 and sits in our reserves, one history-free year from eligibility). If you spot a change we haven't caught, email [email protected] and we will correct the record publicly. If it's listed, it exists.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best computer science school in the U.S.?

MIT ranks #1 on the composite — U.S. News undergraduate CS 50%, QS Computer Science 30%, College Scorecard outcomes 20%. MIT also anchors both published tables, and its S.B. in Computer Science and Engineering passed the same program-existence gate as all 50.

How was this ranking made?

A pool of 72 institutions from the U.S. News and QS computer science tables (plus program-strong schools the tables underrate) was scored on a fixed composite — U.S. News CS 50%, QS CS 30%, College Scorecard outcomes 20% — then gated: every finalist had to actually award a bachelor's degree in computer science. Three pool names were killed at the gate.

Why isn't Olin College on the list?

Because Olin does not grant a computer science degree. Its own majors page (checked October 17, 2026) lists three ABET degrees — mechanical engineering, electrical and computer engineering, and a general engineering degree — with computing offered only as a concentration inside the third. An elite engineering school, but there is no CS bachelor's to rank.

Why isn't Claremont McKenna on the list?

Claremont McKenna's official site states that it does not itself offer a major in computer science; its students major through Harvey Mudd or Pomona. Harvey Mudd — the granting college — is ranked at #23 on its own record.
