The 50 Best High Schools in California
California runs more than 1,600 ranked public high schools, and its best list is a fight between three kinds of schools: Los Angeles County's selective STEM magnets, the big zoned comprehensives of Silicon Valley and Orange County, and a statewide scatter of early-college and charter campuses that punch far above their size. We scored the candidates on California state outcomes (50%), U.S. News rankings (25%), Niche grades (15%), and GreatSchools ratings (10%), then ranked the composite. The top spot goes to Los Angeles — the Science Academy STEM Magnet in North Hollywood, No. 1 in California and No. 10 in the nation in the 2026–27 U.S. News edition, with Whitney High School in Cerritos and Oxford Academy in Cypress right behind it.
Then every school on the draft list went through the existence gate: checked against California Department of Education (CDE/DataQuest) school-directory records and NCES to confirm it is a real, open campus — not a district, not a program inside another school, and not a name that closed years ago. The gate caught real traps. Oakland Charter High School still circulates on older ranking pages, but it closed on June 30, 2025 after its charter was denied renewal. Troy Tech is a famous magnet program, but it operates inside Troy High School in Fullerton — the school is ranked here at No. 14, the program is not a separate entry. And 'University High School' is three different California schools: the Fresno charter on our list at No. 7, the Irvine comprehensive at No. 31, and a third campus in Los Angeles that was scored separately and cut on composite.
How this ranking was built — and what got cut
The composite is the published school formula — California state outcomes 50% (CAASPP proficiency and CDE outcome data), U.S. News 25%, Niche 15%, GreatSchools 10% — applied to California public high schools only: comprehensive, magnet, charter, and early-college campuses that hold their own CDE campus listing. Selectivity is disclosed, not hidden: the top of this list is dominated by selective and application schools (Science Academy STEM Magnet, Whitney, Oxford Academy, California Academy of Mathematics and Science, and Lowell all select their students), and the highest-ranked school a student can simply be zoned to is Lynbrook High School in San Jose at No. 10, followed by Mission San Jose High School in Fremont at No. 11. Private schools were out of scope for this list by design.
The existence gate, run against CDE directory records and NCES, returned 46 clean and 4 flags across the final 50, from an 84-school pool. The kills are the credibility of the list: Oakland Charter High School (closed June 30, 2025, after Oakland Unified denied renewal in January 2025 and Alameda County denied the appeal in April 2025), George Washington Carver School of Arts and Sciences in Sacramento (board voted to close it at the end of the 2025–26 school year, effective June 30, 2026), the Highly Gifted Magnet at North Hollywood High School and Troy Tech (programs inside other schools, not campuses — the UNT/TAMS rule), and every district name offered up as a school — San Dieguito Union, Fremont Union, and Palo Alto Unified are districts; their campuses are what appear here.
Four flags are disclosed rather than smoothed over. Science Academy STEM Magnet (No. 1) enrolls only about 260 high-school students in the U.S. News profile, so its sample is small — but it is held at No. 1, not below it, because both primary signals agree there: it is No. 1 in California in U.S. News 2026–27 and posted 98.8% English and 99.4% math proficiency in the state's October 2026 CAASPP release. Girls Academic Leadership Academy (No. 13) is a selective girls' STEM campus (grades 6–12) whose No. 2 Niche ranking in California drives its slot, held below the top ten on a thinner state-outcomes record. California School of the Arts – San Gabriel Valley (No. 25) is Niche's No. 3 public high school in California, but the 50% state-outcomes quarter does not support a top-ten slot for an audition arts charter, so it is held at No. 25. Western Center Academy (No. 15) earns its slot on a No. 13-in-California U.S. News charter signal with thin Niche and GreatSchools cross-checks. The bottom of the list is a band, not a photo finish — Ghidotti Early College High School in Grass Valley, a 167-student early-college campus with a 100% English proficiency reading in the 2024 CAASPP tables, is the documented first alternate: one signal, however perfect, does not buy a top-50 slot.

How we rank
Ranked on CA state outcomes (CAASPP), college readiness, graduation outcomes, and reviews — 2026 composite.
Before any scoring, every candidate passes our existence gate: confirmed open, operating at the location listed, and showing recent activity. Anything closed, moved, or mislabeled is removed — no exceptions, no grandfathering. Weights and sources are published on our methodology page.
Notes & corrections
School facts move — districts consolidate, charters close, new academies open. This list is re-verified against state and federal registries before it is posted anywhere, and spot-checked on a rolling basis. If you spot a change we haven't caught, email [email protected] and we will correct the record publicly. If it's listed, it exists.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best high school in California?
Science Academy STEM Magnet in North Hollywood (Los Angeles) ranks No. 1. It is No. 1 in California and No. 10 nationally in the 2026–27 U.S. News edition, and it posted 98.8% English and 99.4% math proficiency in the California Department of Education's October 2026 test-score release — first or tied-first on both primary quarters of the composite. It is a selective magnet with academic prerequisites, which we disclose rather than bury. Whitney High School in Cerritos ranks No. 2 and Oxford Academy in Cypress No. 3.
How are California high schools ranked here?
California state outcomes carry 50% of the composite (CAASPP proficiency and CDE outcome data), U.S. News rankings 25%, Niche grades 15%, and GreatSchools ratings 10%. Every finalist was first verified as an open, CDE-listed campus against California Department of Education and NCES records. Only public high schools were scored for this list.
Why isn't Troy Tech ranked separately from Troy High School?
Because there is no separate Troy Tech campus to rank. Troy Tech is a four-year STEM magnet program inside Troy High School in Fullerton — students in the program attend Troy, take Troy classes, and graduate from Troy. It is an excellent program; it is not a California public high school campus, and this list ranks campuses. The same rule removed the Highly Gifted Magnet at North Hollywood High School, a program (established 1989, for students with a measured IQ of 145+) inside North Hollywood High School. Troy High School itself is ranked No. 14.
Are magnet and charter schools included?
Yes — magnets, charters, and early-college high schools are included when they are their own CDE-listed campus, and their selectivity is disclosed. Nine of the top ten are selective, application, lottery, or charter campuses. The top-ranked open-enrollment comprehensive high schools are Lynbrook (San Jose) at No. 10, Mission San Jose (Fremont) at No. 11, and Canyon Crest Academy (San Diego) at No. 16.
