The 50 Best Italian Restaurants in New Jersey
No state outside Italy argues about Italian food like New Jersey — red-sauce institutions that predate the interstate, Sicilian fine dining in Collingswood, handmade-pasta rooms at the Shore, and casino dining rooms with national awards. We scored the candidates on the critic canon (40%) — NJ Monthly and NJ.com's best-Italian lists, James Beard recognition, Wine Spectator and national roundups — Google ratings weighted by review volume (35%), and heritage and geographic spread (25%), then ranked the composite. Chef Vola's of Atlantic City, a James Beard America's Classics winner serving since 1921, takes #1.
Then we verified all 50, one by one — and the gate caught names that still headline other people's lists. Fascino of Montclair, for two decades one of the most celebrated Italian rooms in the state, closed in June 2023. Osteria Giotto, also Montclair, has been closed since 2016. A Mano in Ridgewood, Caffe Anello in Westwood, Fornelletto at the Borgata, and Ama in Sea Bright are all gone. Two restaurants named Il Giardino that appear in directories could not be found trading anywhere. Every entry below was confirmed open, in the town listed, under the name it actually trades under today. If it's listed, it exists.
How this ranking was built — and what got cut
The pool started at 117 candidate restaurants, checked region by region against the published food weights — critic canon 40%, Google rating weighted by review volume 35%, heritage and geographic spread 25% — and the existence gate: open now, in the town listed, with a recent trading signal inside the last 90 days. Ninety-two verified-open restaurants were scored; the published 50 came back 39 clean, 3 after name or town corrections, 4 published on live-listing evidence where dated reviews ran thin, 3 flagged as seasonal shore operations, and 1 flagged for a renovation re-check. Zero failures — because nine closed restaurants were killed before they could get near the list.
The kills: Fascino (Montclair) closed in June 2023 after 20 years; its room reopened under a new name and a new owner, and that restaurant — Gioia Mia — earned its own place at #28. Osteria Giotto (Montclair) closed in July 2016 and still appears in roundups a decade later. A Mano (Ridgewood) and Caffe Anello (Westwood) are marked permanently closed in their own listings. Fornelletto at the Borgata closed in 2017; Ama in Sea Bright closed in 2018, replaced by a different restaurant at the same address. Annata Wine Bar in Hammonton closed in April 2026. The Taj-era Trattoria Il Mulino name is dead — the Hard Rock successor trades today as Il Mulino, and it is ranked at #11 under that name. And the most instructive failure: two separate 'Il Giardino' listings, in Cedar Grove and Avenel, could not be found in any current source — no listing, no address, no phone. They were excluded as unverifiable rather than repeated.
Judgment calls, disclosed. Two entries are Italian steakhouses first (Toscano, #6 — which NJ.com's own best-Italian ranking also places) and are ranked with that framing stated. Three Wildwood-area institutions (Alfe's, The Ravioli House, Little Italy) traded through the 2026 shore season and carry seasonal flags. Eno Terra (#9) carries a watch flag: a July 2026 signal suggested a renovation closure that never materialized — it traded through September — and it will be re-checked in the week this posts. Four famous names with conflicting open/closed evidence were held out entirely — Il Nido of Marlboro and Bistro di Marino of Collingswood among them. Where the signals conflict, the answer is out.

How we rank
Ranked on critic canon, Google ratings weighted by review volume, and heritage & geographic spread — 2026 composite.
Before any scoring, every candidate passes our existence gate: confirmed open, operating at the location listed, and showing recent activity. Anything closed, moved, or mislabeled is removed — no exceptions, no grandfathering. Weights and sources are published on our methodology page.
Notes & corrections
This list is re-verified before it is posted anywhere, and spot-checked on a rolling basis — restaurants close, move, and change names (six entries on this list were caught under a former name, a successor's name, or the wrong town by the verification pass). Seasonal shore restaurants are checked against their current-season hours, and Eno Terra's renovation status is re-checked in the week of posting. If you spot a change we haven't caught, email [email protected] and we will correct the record publicly. If it's listed, it exists.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best Italian restaurant in New Jersey?
Chef Vola's in Atlantic City ranks #1 on the composite — critic canon 40%, Google rating weighted by review volume 35%, heritage and geographic spread 25%. It is a James Beard America's Classics winner (2011), has served since 1921, and was verified open with September 2026 reviews before publication.
How was this ranking made?
A pool of 117 candidates was scored on critic canon (40%), Google rating weighted by review volume (35%), and heritage and geographic spread (25%), then passed through an existence gate: open, in the listed town, trading under its current name, with a recent activity signal. Nine closed restaurants and five unverifiable or conflicting names were removed during verification; the final 50 verified 50-for-50.
Why isn't Fascino in Montclair on the list?
Fascino closed in June 2023, after a 20-year run as one of New Jersey's most decorated Italian restaurants. Its Montclair room was sold and reopened as Gioia Mia under Fascino's former general manager — a different restaurant, verified open and ranked on its own merits at #28. A closed legend cannot be ranked, however much we miss it.
Why isn't Il Nido in Marlboro on the list?
Because we could not prove it either way, and unproven means out. One current source marks Il Nido closed ahead of a steakhouse conversion while its own site still shows hours; no dated review inside our 90-day window settled it. The same rule held out Bistro di Marino in Collingswood and Cortina in Paterson. If Il Nido's status resolves, it will be first in line for re-verification.
