The 50 Best Pizza Places in New York
New York does not have a pizza scene; it has several, stacked on top of each other — coal-fired classics in Manhattan, slice shops in Brooklyn, tavern pies on Staten Island, Utica tomato pie, Buffalo cup-and-char, and a Hudson Valley worth driving for. We scored the candidates on the critic canon (40%) — the New York Times, Eater NY, The Infatuation, Time Out, the Michelin Guide, and the 50 Top Pizza guide — Google ratings weighted by review volume (35%), and heritage and geographic spread (25%), then ranked the composite.
Then we verified all 50, one by one — and the gate did real damage to some famous names. Prince Street Pizza is not on this list: its Nolita flagship's records conflict (one major listing says permanently closed while others show it trading), and where the evidence conflicts, the answer is out. Marta, Danny Meyer's Roman pizzeria, closed on August 25, 2023, and Franny's of Park Slope closed in 2017 — both still appear on best-of lists around the internet. Di Fara does make it: the Midwood original is verified open and trading, even though its founder died in 2022 and its Williamsburg and Manhattan outposts are closed. If it's listed, it exists.
How this ranking was built — and what got cut
The pool started at more than 100 candidate pizzerias, checked region by region against the published food weights — critic canon 40%, Google rating weighted by review volume 35%, heritage and geographic spread 25% — and the existence gate: open now, at the location listed, with recent trading evidence. The final 50 came back 46 clean, 3 after label corrections, and 1 flagged for limited hours. Zero failures — because the closed and ambiguous names were killed before they could get near the list.
The kills and corrections: Marta served its last meal on August 25, 2023, when Union Square Hospitality Group closed it after the Redbury Hotel's conversion. Franny's closed on August 20, 2017. Prince Street Pizza's flagship was excluded on conflicting evidence — a permanently-closed listing against current-hours listings and a September 2026 chain promotion that never resolves the flagship itself. Paulie Gee's original Greenpoint dining room closed on January 4, 2026 and reopened as a tavern called Me And Paul's, so the brand is ranked through its verified-open Slice Shop two blocks away. Kesté is listed at its Fulton Street restaurant because the original Bleecker Street location is permanently closed, and Scarr's is listed at 35 Orchard Street, its home since a 2023 move across the street. Di Fara's Williamsburg and Seaport locations are permanently closed; the Midwood original was verified with October 2026 reviews.
Three judgment calls are worth printing. The top five — L'Industrie, Lucali, Una Pizza Napoletana, Di Fara, and L&B Spumoni Gardens — finished within half a point of each other on the composite; the order inside that cluster follows the freshest canon, which is why L'Industrie (the Infatuation's top slice, 50 Top Pizza's Pizza of the Year 2025) leads and Una, 50 Top Pizza's #1 in America, sits third despite a three-night week that suppresses its review volume. The split is 35 New York City to 15 rest-of-state, with all five boroughs represented and regional styles — Utica tomato pie at #13, Buffalo cup-and-char at #9 and #23 — ranked on the same composite as the city slice shops. And Totonno's of Coney Island carries the list's only flag: verified open, but down to weekend lunch hours (Saturday–Sunday, 12:00–5:30 PM) while its owners publicly look for a buyer.

How we rank
Ranked on critic canon, Google ratings weighted by review volume, and heritage & geographic spread — 2026 composite.
Before any scoring, every candidate passes our existence gate: confirmed open, operating at the location listed, and showing recent activity. Anything closed, moved, or mislabeled is removed — no exceptions, no grandfathering. Weights and sources are published on our methodology page.
Notes & corrections
This list is re-verified before it is posted anywhere, and spot-checked on a rolling basis — pizzerias close, move, and change names (three entries on this list were caught mid-move, mid-rename, or running reduced hours by the verification pass). Limited-hours spots are checked against their current schedules. If you spot a change we haven't caught, email [email protected] and we will correct the record publicly. If it's listed, it exists.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best pizza in New York?
L'Industrie Pizzeria in Williamsburg, Brooklyn ranks #1 on the composite — critic canon 40%, Google rating weighted by review volume 35%, heritage and geographic spread 25% — ahead of Lucali, Una Pizza Napoletana, Di Fara, and L&B Spumoni Gardens. Like every entry, it was verified open and trading before publication.
How was this ranking made?
More than 100 candidates statewide were scored on critic canon (40%), Google rating weighted by review volume (35%), and heritage and geographic spread (25%), then passed through an existence gate: open, at the listed location, actively trading, with evidence from the last 90 days. Closed and ambiguous names were removed during verification; the final 50 verified 50-for-50.
Why isn't Prince Street Pizza on the list?
Because we could not prove the flagship exists as an operating restaurant. The Nolita original at 27 Prince Street carries a permanently-closed listing on one major platform while other platforms show current hours, and a September 2026 chain-wide promotion speaks for the chain, not that dining room. Fiftyfolio's rule is that conflicting evidence means out — the same gate that excludes Marta (closed August 25, 2023) and Franny's (closed 2017) outright. If the flagship's status resolves, it is first in line for re-verification.
Are Utica tomato pie and Buffalo-style pizza represented?
Both, deliberately. Utica tomato pie is represented by O'Scugnizzo Pizzeria at #13 — founded in 1914, the second-oldest pizzeria in America, still serving its upside-down tomato pie on Bleecker Street in Utica. Buffalo's cup-and-char style places twice: Bocce Club Pizza at #9 (since 1946) and La Nova Pizzeria at #23 (since 1957). Regional styles were scored on the same composite as every New York City slice shop.
