The 50 Best Restaurants in New Jersey
New Jersey's best restaurant is not in a casino, a mall, or Manhattan's shadow — on our composite it is Lita, in Aberdeen, a Monmouth County dining room that outscored every famous name in the state. We built the pool from the critic canon — NJ Monthly and NJ.com's best-of lists, James Beard Foundation recognition, and the top finishers from our own specialty rankings — then scored it 40% critic canon, 35% Google ratings weighted by review volume, and 25% heritage and geographic spread. Heirloom Kitchen, Chef Vola's, Razza, and Elements round out the top five.
Then every one of the 50 was verified open, in the town listed, with a trading signal inside the last 90 days. The sweep killed names that still headline other lists: Cucharamama in Hoboken and A Toute Heure in Cranford (both closed in 2020), Jockey Hollow in Morristown (closed January 2025), The Manor in West Orange (closed 2023). If it's listed, it exists — and if it closed, it's not listed.
How this ranking was built — and what got cut
The pool ran past 150 names across three research passes, checked against the published food weights — critic canon 40%, Google rating weighted by review volume 35%, heritage and geographic spread 25% — and the existence gate: open now, in the town listed, with a recent trading signal inside the last 90 days. The published 50 came back 44 clean, 2 after name corrections, 2 published on thinner evidence with re-checks scheduled, 1 flagged as a seasonal shore operation, and 1 published with a disclosed flag. Zero failures. The spread reached 20 of New Jersey's 21 counties; Salem County produced no candidate that surfaced in any canon source with gate-passing evidence, and we disclose the gap rather than force a name in.
The kills: Fascino of Montclair closed in June 2023 and stays dead on this list too. Cucharamama (Hoboken) closed in 2020. Jockey Hollow Bar & Kitchen (Morristown) closed in January 2025. The Manor (West Orange) served its last in July 2023, and A Toute Heure (Cranford) closed in August 2020. Two famous names are here under the names they actually trade under today: Restaurant Nicholas retired its name and operates as Nicholas Barrel & Roost, ranked #35; Highlawn Pavilion relaunched in 2021 as The Highlawn, ranked #49. And James on Main in Hackettstown was held out entirely — major listings mark it permanently closed while another source shows current hours. Where the signals conflict, the answer is out.
Judgment calls, disclosed. The Pub in Pennsauken (#44) is published with a flag: its owners listed it for sale in August 2026, it reopened on September 18, 2026 and is trading, and it will be re-verified in the week this posts. June BYOB (#30) and Hearthside (#41), both Collingswood, carry thinner dated evidence and the same scheduled re-check. Black Eyed Susans (#45) in Harvey Cedars is a seasonal shore operation, flagged as one. First reserves, all verified: Turtle + the Wolf (Montclair), 100 Steps (Cranford), Peter Shields Inn (Cape May), and Semolina (Red Bank).

How we rank
Ranked on critic canon, Google ratings weighted by review volume, and heritage & geographic spread — 2026 composite.
Before any scoring, every candidate passes our existence gate: confirmed open, operating at the location listed, and showing recent activity. Anything closed, moved, or mislabeled is removed — no exceptions, no grandfathering. Weights and sources are published on our methodology page.
Notes & corrections
This list is re-verified before it is posted anywhere, and spot-checked on a rolling basis. Three entries carry publish-week re-checks — June BYOB and Hearthside (thinner dated evidence) and The Pub in Pennsauken (for-sale listing followed by a September 2026 reopening; trading at verification and re-checked in the week of posting) — and one, Black Eyed Susans, is checked against its current-season hours. If you spot a change we haven't caught, email [email protected] and we will correct the record publicly. If it's listed, it exists.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best restaurant in New Jersey?
Lita in Aberdeen ranks #1 on the composite — critic canon 40%, Google rating weighted by review volume 35%, heritage and geographic spread 25%. Heirloom Kitchen (Old Bridge), Chef Vola's (Atlantic City), Razza (Jersey City), and Elements (Princeton) complete the top five; all 50 were verified open with a trading signal inside the last 90 days.
How was this ranking made?
A pool of more than 150 candidates from the critic canon (NJ Monthly, NJ.com, James Beard Foundation recognition, and Fiftyfolio's own specialty lists) was scored on the published food weights, then passed through an existence gate: open, in the listed town, trading under its current name, with recent activity. Seventeen closed, retired, or unverifiable names were removed during verification; the final 50 verified 50-for-50.
Why isn't Restaurant Nicholas on the list?
The name was retired. The Red Bank dining room operates today as Nicholas Barrel & Roost — same operators, current name — and it is ranked at #35 under the name it trades under now. We list restaurants as they exist, not as they were famous.
Why isn't Jockey Hollow on the list?
Jockey Hollow Bar & Kitchen in Morristown closed in January 2025 (reported by NJBIZ on January 2, 2025) and its own listing reads Permanently Closed. A closed restaurant cannot be ranked, however good it was.
