The 50 Best Bars in New Jersey
New Jersey's best bar is a 1933 tavern that holds Caldwell's first post-Prohibition liquor license. Cloverleaf Tavern takes #1 on our composite, ahead of Dullboy in Jersey City, Krug's Tavern in Newark, D'Jais in Belmar, and the Riverside Inn in Cranford. We built the pool from NJ Monthly and NJ.com best-of coverage, the USA TODAY Bars of the Year 2026 list, established dive-bar and Irish-pub guides, and the state's heritage taverns and brewery taprooms, then scored it 40% critic canon, 35% Google ratings weighted by review volume, and 25% heritage and geographic spread.
Then every one of the 50 was verified open, in the town listed, with a trading signal inside the last 90 days. Bars churn faster than any category we rank, and the sweep was brutal: eleven closed businesses were cut, including Atlantic City's Irish Pub, a fixture since 1902 that has been dark since the end of 2025, and Morristown's Jockey Hollow Bar & Kitchen. Two more famous names, Clydz in New Brunswick and Keg & Kitchen in Westmont, were held out because we could not confirm they are trading today. Two entries are flagged as seasonal shore bars confirmed in their 2026 seasons. If it's listed, it exists, and if it closed, it's not listed.
How this ranking was built — and what got cut
The pool ran past 95 names, checked against the published food weights (critic canon 40%, Google rating weighted by review volume 35%, heritage and geographic spread 25%) and the strictest existence gate in our system: a live Google Places operating record plus a dated recent-activity signal inside roughly 90 days, with NJ liquor-license reporting used to cross-check disputed statuses. The published 50 covers all 21 New Jersey counties, the first of our state lists to do so. Monmouth County leads with 8 entries, and we disclose that rather than hide it: the Jersey Shore bar belt and Asbury Park's three entries (Wonder Bar, Johnny Mac House of Spirits, Bond Street Bar) are genuinely that deep. Essex follows with 6 and Hudson with 5; no other county has more than 3. The list runs from 1930s dives (Krug's, Tierney's, Rossi's, C-View Inn) to a reigning USA Today 10Best winner, The Brown Room at Congress Hall in Cape May, named the #1 hotel bar in America for 2026.
The kills. The Irish Pub in Atlantic City (owned by the Burke family since 1972, in business since 1902) has been closed since the end of 2025, missed the entire 2026 summer season, and sits in a state fire-code dispute with no reopening date, per NJ.com reporting through September 2026; at least one national aggregator still promotes it as open around the clock, which is exactly the trap this gate exists for. Jockey Hollow Bar & Kitchen in Morristown is Permanently Closed on Google Places; owner Chris Cannon announced the closure on January 3, 2025, and stale 'Updated 2026' booking pages still selling it were rejected as evidence. Also removed as permanently closed: Fox & Crow in Jersey City, The Quiet Man Pub in Dover (last night August 29, 2026, after 47 years), 16 Prospect Wine Bar & Bistro in Westfield, Barcade in Jersey City, Pig and Prince in Montclair, Madison Wine & Tap in Madison, Bordentown Square Tap + Grill (closed June 20, 2026), and Iron Hill Brewery's New Jersey locations (chain-wide closure September 2025). Maxwell's Tavern in Hoboken, gone since 2018, still surfaces on nostalgia lists and was excluded on sight. Concept kills are listed separately: Dock's Oyster House and The Proving Ground are restaurants with bars, not bars, however good they are.
Judgment calls, disclosed. Two entries are seasonal. The Parker House in Sea Girt (#27) trades May through Labor Day and was confirmed in its 2026 season by Asbury Park Press coverage in July 2026 and its own 2026 season program. D'Jais in Belmar (#4), a USA TODAY Bars of the Year 2026 winner, runs a peak summer season with a locals' fall schedule and July 2026 dated reviews. Two entries are published on thinner in-window signals and we say so: The National Hotel in Frenchtown (#34) and Mannion's Irish Pub in Somerville (#37) both hold live operating listings with current hours and October 2026 guide coverage, but their freshest dated reviews sit near the edge of the window; both carry a re-check flag. Three listees were promoted from the reserve pool when higher-ranked names failed the gate: The Laundromat in Morristown replaced Jockey Hollow, Nip-N-Tuck Bar & Grill in Long Branch replaced The Irish Pub, and The Pour House in Westmont and The Waiting Room in Rahway replaced Keg & Kitchen and 16 Prospect. First reserves, verified open but below the cut: White Star Bar and Pint (Jersey City), The Junto Attic Bar (Jersey City), and The Osprey (Manasquan).

How we rank
Ranked on critic canon, Google ratings weighted by review volume, and heritage & geographic spread — 2026 composite.
Before any scoring, every candidate passes our existence gate: confirmed open, operating at the location listed, and showing recent activity. Anything closed, moved, or mislabeled is removed — no exceptions, no grandfathering. Weights and sources are published on our methodology page.
Notes & corrections
This list is re-verified before it is posted anywhere, and spot-checked on a rolling basis. Two entries are seasonal shore operations checked against their 2026 season records (The Parker House and D'Jais), and two, The National Hotel and Mannion's Irish Pub, carry disclosed thinner dated signals with re-checks scheduled. Bars close faster than any category we cover; if you spot a change we haven't caught, email [email protected] and we will correct the record publicly. If it's listed, it exists.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best bar in New Jersey?
Cloverleaf Tavern in Caldwell ranks #1 on the composite (critic canon 40%, Google rating weighted by review volume 35%, heritage and geographic spread 25%). Founded in 1933 and holding Caldwell's first post-Prohibition liquor license, it was also named one of USA TODAY's Bars of the Year for 2026. Dullboy (Jersey City), Krug's Tavern (Newark), D'Jais (Belmar), and the Riverside Inn (Cranford) complete the top five.
How was this ranking made?
A pool of more than 95 candidates from NJ Monthly and NJ.com best-of coverage, the USA TODAY Bars of the Year 2026 list, established dive-bar and Irish-pub guides, and heritage taverns and taprooms was scored on the published food weights, then passed through the strictest existence gate we run: a live operating listing plus a dated activity signal inside roughly 90 days, cross-checked against liquor-license reporting where a status was in doubt. Eleven closed businesses and two unconfirmable ones were removed during verification; the final 50 covers all 21 New Jersey counties.
Why isn't The Irish Pub in Atlantic City on the list?
The Irish Pub on St. James Place has been closed since the end of 2025. It missed the entire 2026 summer season while caught in a state fire-code and sprinkler dispute with the high-rise above it, and as of September 2026 reporting there is no reopening date. Some national list sites still describe it as open 24 hours a day; those pages are recycling pre-closure content. A closed bar cannot be ranked, however beloved it was. Nip-N-Tuck Bar & Grill in Long Branch takes the shore-Irish slot at #13.
Why isn't Clydz on the list?
Clydz served its last night at its longtime Paterson Street address in May 2026. A relocation to the HELIX development was announced in March 2026 with a fall 2026 reopening target, but as of October 20, 2026 we could find no confirmation that the new location has opened, and its booking page reads 'temporarily offline.' Our rule is that ambiguity means out. If the new Clydz opens and trades, it will be first in line for the next edition.
