The 50 Best Seafood Restaurants in New Jersey — the full Top 50 ranking graphic

New Jersey's best seafood restaurant is a raw bar that has been shucking since 1897. Dock's Oyster House in Atlantic City takes #1 on our composite, ahead of The Lobster House in Cape May, Bahrs Landing in Highlands, Blue Point Grill in Princeton, and Salt Seafood & Oyster Bar in New Brunswick. We built the pool from NJ Monthly and NJ.com best-seafood coverage, Eater NJ, the critic canon, and the state's heritage dockside institutions, then scored it 40% critic canon, 35% Google ratings weighted by review volume, and 25% heritage and geographic spread.

Then every one of the 50 was verified open, in the town listed, with a trading signal inside the last 90 days. The sweep killed two names that still appear on other lists: Max's Seafood Cafe in Gloucester City and the former Milford Oyster House in Milford, both now permanently closed. Four entries are flagged as seasonal shore operations that traded through their 2026 seasons. If it's listed, it exists, and if it closed, it's not listed.

How this ranking was built — and what got cut

The pool ran past 115 names, checked against the published food weights (critic canon 40%, Google rating weighted by review volume 35%, heritage and geographic spread 25%) and the existence gate: a live Google Places record or corroborating current listing, plus a recent-activity signal inside roughly 90 days. The published 50 came back 45 clean, 4 flagged as seasonal operations with confirmed 2026 seasons, and 1 published on thinner dated-review evidence with the basis disclosed below. The spread covers 16 of New Jersey's 21 counties, from Cape May to Bergen. Five counties produced no gate-passing seafood-led candidate (Gloucester, Hunterdon, Salem, Sussex, and Warren), and we disclose the gaps rather than force names in. Monmouth County leads with 7 entries, reflecting the depth of its shore and bayshore seafood scene; no other county has more than 6.

The kills. Max's Seafood Cafe (Gloucester City) reads Permanently Closed on Google Places, and OpenTable carries the same notice; it was replaced by The Boiling House in Cherry Hill, keeping Camden County on the list. The Milford Oyster House in Milford had already traded as The Milford House, and both Google Places and OpenTable list that business as permanently closed; recent roundup articles still promoting it are recycling pre-closure content. The same gate removed Bonefish Grill in Brick (closure reported October 15, 2026), Rare Company Seafood on Long Beach Island (permanent closure announced November 16, 2025), the Chart House in Weehawken (closed May 14, 2026), Langosta Lounge in Asbury Park (closed February 2023), and Due Mari in New Brunswick (closed 2019). Three more were cut on the concept check, because seafood is not their identity: Erini Restaurant in Ewing, Andre's Lakeside Dining in Sparta, and Terra Nova in Sewell are general restaurants with seafood on the menu, not seafood restaurants. One entry is listed under the name it trades under today: the Point Pleasant Beach restaurant long known as Point Lobster Co. is ranked #22 as Point Lobster Bar & Grill.

Judgment calls, disclosed. Four entries are seasonal. Parker's Garage & Oyster Saloon in Beach Haven (#15) traded its full 2026 season and closed for the year around September 24, 2026, per verified diner reviews. Beach Creek Oyster Bar & Grill in Wildwood (#26) reopened for the 2026 season. Charlesworth Hotel & Restaurant in Fortescue (#47) runs weekend-only hours on a spring-through-fall pattern. Ship Bottom Shellfish (#20) moved to a reduced fall schedule of Thursday through Sunday. Seabra's Marisqueira in Newark (#16) is published on a live operating listing with current hours and listing updates from August 2026; its latest dated reviews are from June 2026, just outside the 90-day window, and we say so rather than round up. Red's Lobster Pot in Point Pleasant Beach was held out entirely: it is a seasonal operation and we could not find a firm record of it opening for the 2026 season. First reserves, verified open but below the cut: Casa Vasca (Newark), Wharfside Restaurant (Point Pleasant Beach), and Shore Fresh Seafood (Point Pleasant Beach).

How we rank

Ranked on critic canon, Google ratings weighted by review volume, and heritage & geographic spread — 2026 composite.

Before any scoring, every candidate passes our existence gate: confirmed open, operating at the location listed, and showing recent activity. Anything closed, moved, or mislabeled is removed — no exceptions, no grandfathering. Weights and sources are published on our methodology page.

Notes & corrections

This list is re-verified before it is posted anywhere, and spot-checked on a rolling basis. Four entries are seasonal shore operations checked against their 2026 season records (Parker's Garage & Oyster Saloon, Beach Creek Oyster Bar & Grill, Charlesworth Hotel & Restaurant, and Ship Bottom Shellfish), and one, Seabra's Marisqueira, carries a disclosed thinner dated-review signal with a re-check scheduled. If you spot a change we haven't caught, email [email protected] and we will correct the record publicly. If it's listed, it exists.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best seafood restaurant in New Jersey?

Dock's Oyster House in Atlantic City ranks #1 on the composite (critic canon 40%, Google rating weighted by review volume 35%, heritage and geographic spread 25%). Run by the Dougherty family since 1897, it was also named New Jersey's best seafood restaurant by Lovefood and Cheapism. The Lobster House (Cape May), Bahrs Landing (Highlands), Blue Point Grill (Princeton), and Salt Seafood & Oyster Bar (New Brunswick) complete the top five.

How was this ranking made?

A pool of more than 115 candidates from NJ Monthly and NJ.com best-seafood coverage, Eater NJ, the critic canon, and heritage dockside institutions was scored on the published food weights, then passed through an existence gate: a live operating listing plus a recent-activity signal inside roughly 90 days. Seven closed businesses and three concept mismatches were removed during verification; the final 50 verified 50-for-50, with four seasonal operations flagged.

Why isn't Max's Seafood Cafe on the list?

Max's Seafood Cafe in Gloucester City is permanently closed. Its Google Places record reads Permanently Closed and OpenTable carries the same notice, even though older best-of lists still rank it. A closed restaurant cannot be ranked, however good it was. The Boiling House in Cherry Hill takes the Camden County slot at #29.

Why isn't Red's Lobster Pot on the list?

Red's Lobster Pot in Point Pleasant Beach is a seasonal operation, and our seasonal rule requires a firm record of opening for the current season. We found no dated evidence that it traded in 2026, so it was held out rather than listed on reputation. Seasonal entries that did make the list, including Parker's Garage & Oyster Saloon and Beach Creek Oyster Bar & Grill, are flagged as seasonal in our verification report.
