The 50 Best Ski Resorts in America
Ask three expert panels to name America's best ski resort and you get three different mountains — so we composited them. SKI Magazine's 2026 reader survey, ZRankings' data-driven table, and Condé Nast Traveler's Readers' Choice were weighted and merged, placement point by placement point. Big Sky, Montana takes #1 — the rare resort the panels agree on — with Snowmass, Telluride, Jackson Hole, and Vail behind it.
Then every finalist was gated on the only fact that matters in October: is it operating lift-served skiing for the 2026–27 season? All 50 are — 2026–27 passes on sale, opening plans announced. The closed names that still haunt old lists — Blandford, Ascutney, the original Elk Meadows — were killed with dated evidence before a single point was scored.
How this ranking was built — and what got cut
The composite was fixed before scoring: SKI Magazine's 2026 reader rankings 43.75%, ZRankings 31.25%, Condé Nast Traveler Readers' Choice 25% — placement points of 101 minus rank on each panel, U.S. resorts only. A fourth intended panel, Powder magazine, publishes no ranked resort list at all — features and news only — so it was dropped as a scored source and its weight reallocated across the three real panels, disclosed here rather than buried. The pool ran 92 resorts; the top 56 were individually gate-checked, and the published 50 is the raw composite order, because the gate removed nobody from it — the panels' top tier is uniformly alive. The cut is clean: Brighton at #50 scores 26.25 against Kirkwood's 24.38 at #51.
The output skews West — 31 of 50, led by Colorado's 13 and Utah's 8, against 19 in the East, led by Vermont's 8 — and the method's soft spot is disclosed rather than smoothed over: ZRankings' top 40 contains no eastern resort at all, which caps every eastern mountain below the national top 15 however SKI's readers rank it. Saddleback, SKI's #1 resort in the East, lands at #36 here for exactly that reason. Two stale assumptions also died in the gate: Homewood (California) reopened to the public for 2025–26 after abandoning its private-access plan, and Sandia Peak (New Mexico) is operating again under new management. Neither makes this list on the composite — but neither is closed, and we do not print that they are.
Access restrictions are disclosed on the entries they affect. Powder Mountain (#31) has run a public/private hybrid since 2024–25: three lifts are homeowner-only and public day tickets are capped. Deer Valley (#6) remains skiers-only, with capped daily sales and reservation requirements for pass holders. Alta (#16) is skiers-only and requires parking reservations on peak days. Mad River Glen (#40) keeps its co-op's skiers-only rule and caps ticket sales, with some passholder-only days. None of that moves a ranking; it is printed so nobody drives six hours into a surprise.

How we rank
Composite of the published resort panels (SKI Magazine, ZRankings, Condé Nast Traveler) — ranked by placement and inclusion. Every resort verified operating for the 2026–27 season.
Before any scoring, every candidate passes our existence gate: confirmed open, operating at the location listed, and showing recent activity. Anything closed, moved, or mislabeled is removed — no exceptions, no grandfathering. Weights and sources are published on our methodology page.
Notes & corrections
Resort status changes with weather, ownership, and access policy, so this list is spot-checked on a rolling basis through the season — two resorts our own brief assumed were closed or private (Homewood, Sandia Peak) turned out to be operating again, and both corrections are documented in the method note. Restrictions noted on entries (caps, reservations, skiers-only rules) are as published by the resorts for 2026–27. If you spot a change we haven't caught, email [email protected] and we will correct the record publicly. If it's listed, it exists.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best ski resort in America?
Big Sky Resort in Montana ranks #1 on the composite of SKI Magazine's 2026 reader survey (43.75%), ZRankings (31.25%), and Condé Nast Traveler Readers' Choice (25%) — scoring 97.81 of 100. Snowmass, Telluride, Jackson Hole, and Vail complete the top five; all 50 were verified operating lift-served skiing for the 2026–27 season.
How was this ranking made?
A pool of 92 U.S. resorts was scored on placement points (101 minus rank) across three published panels, weighted SKI Magazine 43.75%, ZRankings 31.25%, and Condé Nast Traveler 25%. Powder magazine was dropped as a scored panel — it publishes no ranked resort list — and its intended weight was reallocated, as disclosed in the method note. The top 56 were then individually verified as operating for 2026–27.
Why isn't Whistler on the list?
This ranking covers U.S. resorts. Whistler Blackcomb is in British Columbia, Canada — the panels rank it highly, and it was removed in the U.S.-only re-rank before scoring, like the other Canadian entries on those lists.
Why isn't Crested Butte in the top 50?
It missed on arithmetic, not on operations: Crested Butte is verified open for 2026–27 and sits at #52 in the reserves (23.75 points) behind Kirkwood at #51, against a 26.25-point cut line at #50. One panel swing moves it in.
